Eco-House Built Right in the Field — Tour of a Minimalist Cottage in Slovenia

Slovenian architects from Studio Mika reimagined traditional rural housing and built a modern eco-house that sits naturally in the picturesque landscape of a tiny village.

The house is located on the outskirts of the hamlet near Mirna, a place with just 59 residents.

A white facade and tiled roof nod to classic village buildings, while panoramic windows and a cozy terrace with a dining table bring a contemporary country-home feel. But the main surprise waits inside.

The interior is extremely minimalist: very few pieces of furniture, natural wood finishes, monochrome tables, chairs and shelves without ornament. According to the architects, the modest furnishings are meant to reflect the calm, measured rural life outside the walls.

“This house shows how rural traditions can harmonize with contemporary design without sacrificing comfort,” say the project authors.

Quick note: Studio Mika is an architectural practice founded in 2023 in Maribor, Slovenia. The team focuses on sustainability, traditional materials, and a sensitive approach to the landscape.

The house — already named House Kozjek — is timber-built, and straw is used as insulation in the walls and roof.
